DSL vs. Cable, Which is Better?

Everything that we do now is connected to the World Wide Web and having fast internet has become a necessity. Due to this reason, picking an internet service provider requires time and research. If you live in the greater Toronto area, then you have lots of options.

But you need to ask yourself this question:

Should you pick DSL or cable internet?

Surprisingly, many people don’t know the differences between the two. If the only thing you want is an internet connection, does it matter whether it’s DSL or cable? The answer is, it matters and here’s why:

Cable Internet

The main difference between the two is how information is delivered and received.

With cable internet, television cable lines are used to send and receive data and then attaches to the main source. Cable is used in households because recipients who are out or range enjoy normal speeds.

This doesn’t mean that it’s faster and more reliable than DSL. Cable internet uses one cable line per area, meaning the more people using it, the slower it gets.

DSL Internet

DSL uses telephone lines, this can be a phone line or an external cable modem that connects to the surrounding telephone cables.

If you choose multiple lines over shared ones, your speeds rely on how close you are to the ISP to prevent the connection from slowing down due to high volume usage. No matter how many people are on the line, you will receive stable speeds.

Another great DSL feature is the ISP will offer you unlimited internet.

The downside is, not everyone qualifies because you have to be in range with the internet provider. Don’t be too quick to dismiss DSL though, unless you live in remote areas.

Both options have their own advantages and disadvantages. Cable internet is common but that doesn’t mean it’s the best. There are many DSL providers in Toronto providing fast and consistent access.
