Fiber internet has introduced a lot of benefits to Canadian businesses. It is the future of broadband and is way better than DSL and cable. However, you should consider the following to avoid unwanted surprises:
How much does it cost?
Surprisingly, fiber internet is less expensive than traditional DSL and Cable networks. Fiber requires a simple infrastructure than the enormous hardware and infrastructure that is required to set up cable or DSL. With DSL and cable, you are paying for shared bandwidth and complex infrastructure – this is not the case with fiber.
If a fiber line is available near your business, your costs will be much lower.
How fast is it?
With fiber-optic technology, you won’t experience speed or latency concerns. Fiber is 10x faster than the best copper-based technology that money can buy. With fiber, you will receive speeds of at least 10-1000Mbps.
How much bandwidth can you get?
With older internet technology, you have to upgrade your equipment and infrastructure to get more bandwidth. With fiber, you scale up seamlessly without the need for equipment upgrades. All it takes is a call to your internet provider in Canada for settings changes.
Are there any hidden charges?
Many ethical ISPs use fiber to offer unlimited internet and this means that your monthly charge isn’t based on the amount of data used.
Do you have to sign a contract?
Many ISPs will include a 12-month commitment at the very least. This is the standard since the one year period allows them to recuperate their costs. Talk to your ISP before you commit to any contract.
GTA Telecom does not require our clients to sign any contracts.
Can I use Wi-Fi?
Many routers have the wireless internet connectivity features to enable you to provide Wi-Fi at your place of business.
Does my building have Fiber?
The initial cost of installation is determined by your proximity to the fiber ring. Talk to your prospective provider about availability.
You can pass the installation costs to your landlord or property management company by including a stipulation that fiber will be available when leasing a building.
How much will it cost to install fiber for business?
The following factors determine the overall cost:
- The type of existing conduit in your building.
- Proximity to the fiber line.
- Whether there is enough space in your telco closets.
- Whether the building has enough power to support fiber technology.
- Are there physical obstacles such as railroads and highways?
- The layers of bureaucracy that have to be met to get an approval to install fiber.
- The size of your facility.
- The number of paths that the fiber can take to the building.
